Backup Supply

Your own little Safety Net

The point of having a backup supply is that if the worse case scenario would happen you would not have to cold turkey off of nefazodone. I figured out how much nefazodone you would need if you wanted to taper down by the 10% method per month. Because you are going down 10% off the new amount: 200-180-162-146.... It will take you approximately 2 years to go completely off of nefazodone. I also figured you would need a 9 month supply to accomplish this. This could cost you a significant amount of money. If you went to a new drug, you may be able to accelerate the tapering and bridge with the new med. All of this should be done with your doctors approval.

Some doctors may overprescribe so you can slowly build a backup supply, but I would not ask the doctor to do this as in a way it can be considered prescription fraud. The doctor may then not want to help you at all. For someone taking the maximum amount of nefazodone that isn't even an option. What I did is explained that if there was ever a shortage I don't want to be left without a backup because I want to taper properly. I asked him if there was a way to do it and said I understood that I would not be able to run the backup supply through my insurance. He said he had no problem writing an extra prescription and I could fill it someplace other than my regular pharmacy. I used goodrx to find the best price. Even doing that a 9 month supply would cost me over $750. For now I will settle for a 3 month extra supply.

Check the links area where there is a section for discount prescription sites. Check them all to find the best price. Also remember that the cost of nefazodone is per pill. So if you normally get 50mg using your insurance ask for 100mg for the backup supply as you will get double the mg for the same price. Only do this for when you have to pay out of pocket or we could tap out the larger doses for regular prescriptions.

This does not mean that there will be another shortage. It is just for a safety net to make you feel a little better and know you will always be able to taper properly and safely. After going through this shortage having a backup supply for a medication that needs to be tapered is probably a good idea. Also remember to rotate your stock so it doesn't go stale. Store it in a cool dry place. If you can get the original bottles that are sealed that is even better.
